ART307 ENTRY: Jaclyn

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer is an award-winning electronic artist who creates interactive installations. He incorporates a variety of film projections, LED screens, robotics, positional sound, real-time computer graphics, ultrasonic and video sensors, cellphone interfaces, and internet links. Inspired by elements of performance and architecture, Lozano-Hemmer aims to offer a refreshing intermission to the urban affliction of monotonous conformity. He positions his installations in public spaces, mainly throughout America, Europe, and Asia to invite pedestrians to participate in unanticipated recess from society. Because his pieces are generally live events, Lozano-Hemmer documents them photographically or with videos and displays them in galleries. His work tends to rely on aspects of the human body to activate, and therefore human interaction is what initiates and determines the outcome of each piece.
One of my favorite pieces of his is Pulse Park, an installation in Madison Square Park New York that uses sensors to assimilate the heart rate of the park visitors to visually represent human vital signs with spotlights. A participant approaches a sensor that determines their heart rate and 200 lights pulse to the beat of their heart. When the participant releases the sensor, the first light continues to blink with the "remembered" heart beat, and each participant afterwards consecutively activates the individual lights.
